--Poor, poor, poor Shogg! I nearly *cried* at what happened to him. And trying to save Triss too! Honestly, if Shogg were a squirrel (or Triss an otter), I would have begun to suspect a romance- they were that close! Shogg goes on the list of my favorite otters, for sticking with Triss through thick and thin.
--Triss, on the other hand, kinda disappointed me. I was expecing more from her, and it would have been nice to see her show some skills with a sword beforehand, instead of just suddenly becoming an expert swordsmaid without warning (well, besides her ancestry and those dreams). If her character had been expanded on more, I think this book would have been perfect. I loved this book but for one thing: it wasn't as epic as most other books featuring Martin's sword.
--I liked the new cast for the Abbey. Now we have a hare as Mother instead of a badger, and a shrew as Gatekeeper! Awesome! Also interesting is that Skipper is descended from Taggerung- could that mean that Tagg eventually found a mate? The Dibbuns were a hoot; I really wish BJ could have mentioned Dibbuns Against Bedtime more than twice. I think it would have been cool if they tried to take over the whole Abbey, not just the kitchen. ^_^ Imagine, various warlords and vermin fail to capture Redwall, but a bunch of babies accomplish it with ease!
--Ovus and Bluddbeak...what a waste. What an utterly useless waste of life. If I ever get over the fact that Bluddbeak didn't even last one whole chapter, I'd feel sorry for them.
--Mokug was cool. I could totally imagine him stuffing food into his cheeks, heheh. Along with this new species, BJ mentioned other faraway lands we have yet to see (example: the bamboo). Maybe someday we'll get to see some more new creatures, possibly from somewhere in Asia? (Personally, I'd love to see a Panda.)
--Now, here's where I get dirty. I've never once hated any character in these books before. Dislike, yeah, but not hate. And surprisingly, the first one I've grown to hate is a woodlander.
I absolutely, completely, without any doubt, HATE Scarum!!! At first I thought he was annoying for a hare. Clecky was annoying, but compared to Scarum he's nothing. Scarum is the most gluttonous hare I've ever seen; he eats the treats of Dibbuns and makes a pig out of himself on the dinner of those poor hedgehogs who were kind enough to help fix the Stopdog-- and he doesn't even feel sorry for it! He's lazy, insensitive, a liar, blames everything on others, always makes trouble, never learns his lesson, gets away with all his punishments (frankly, I thought the Abbot was being very fair with him), and takes advantage of the kindness of his friends. At times, I was convinced he was a vermin in disguise!
I mean, I love hares (Basil Stag Hare, Hon Rosie and Tammo being my favorites) but the other hares have more than enough good qualities to overshadow their big appetites. Not Scarum. The only good things he did in the entire book was beat up some Ratguards and keep the Freebooters from killing him and his friends right then and there. For the rest of the book he just ate, called his friends rude names, ate, reeled in a big shark, ate, gave Sagax and Kroova headaches, ate, etc. etc.
I'm going to have to write a fanfic to make sure he gets his just desserts (and not the edible kind either!).
Badbeasts:
--First of all, I'd just like to say that Riftun had one of the best death scenes ever, besides Cluny and the bell of course. ZAP! *giggle*
--LoL, loved the Pure Ferrets. For the first few chapters I found it very hard to take any of them seriously; those accents made me laugh so much. I especially liked Bladd for some reason. I would have liked to see him be a Freebooter. ^_^
--The Freebooters!!! They were SO FUN!! At times I was rooting for them more than the good guys! When Plugg was injured, I kept muttering "Please don't kill him off, please don't kill him off!" But then that only led to the loss of his dear tail, and some of the funniest moments in Redwall history. (Ex: "The silver fox got so carried away at one point that he pulled off his tail and whirled it above his head.") *laughs herself silly*
I was so totally devastated when he got dragged off by the snakes. My favorite character in the book gone just like that! *sigh* The rest of the Freebooters were cool too. They actually respected their leader, and were at such a loss with him and Slitfang gone- they were like one big familiy! I've never before loved a group of vermin so much. I'm glad that at least Grubbage ended up alright, but poor Tazzin, poor Ripper, poor Scummy... *sniff*
--Those three big adders that I can't remember the names of. Very creative. Very SCARY. Very effective. I even feel a little sorry for them.
All in all, I loved the book Triss. I didn't like the last three novels very much, but I actually enjoyed reading this one (except for the Scarum parts). It was refreshing, funny, and it has successfully reawakened the Redwall spirit within me. REDWAAAAALL!!!!
